What AWA Do
At AWA Engineers, our award-winning in-house team of engineers draw from their extensive expertise to deliver design services.
We specialise in designing buildings using the Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) system. It’s similar to the approach we take for conventional buildings but requires specialist attention. Using industry-standard timber design software, we create precise designs in collabroation with trusted SIPs manufacturers. The panels are fabricated based on our designs and shipped directly to the site, ready for assembly.
Choosing AWA offers more than just structural design – we are your complete engineering design solution. With in-house foundation and drainage design services, we can assist with the entire build process. Our integrated approach means we handle everything from the superstructure design to the foundations.
What are Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs)?
SIPs are a highly efficient way to construct walls and roofs. Instead of using traditional materials like bricks, masonry or timber framing, SIPs use large, lightweight panels. These panels consist of a layer of polystyrene insulation, sandwiched between engineered timber boards known as Orientated Strand Board (OSB).
This innovative design minimises thermal bridging – a common issue in conventional construction where timber studs interrupt the insulation. With SIPs, the continuous insulation layer significantly reduces these interruptions, making it perfect for high-performance and energy-efficient homes. The OSB boards also help achieve airtightness, preventing uncontrolled ventilation and improving the thermal envelope.
SIPs are quick to assemble, dramatically reducing build time. A project that might take six months with traditional methods could be completed in as little as three months using SIPs.
From carports and garages to luxury homes aiming for maximum energy efficiency, SIPs suit a variety of projects. Their lightweight nature also makes them ideal for self-builders. Plus, with panels up to 200mm thick and made from polystyrene foam – one of the best insulators available – you get a highly insulated, energy-efficient structure.
Do You Need Structural Insulated Panels for Your Project?
SIPs are ideal for smaller, one- to two-storey dwellings. While they’re not typically used for multi-storey apartments, they are perfect for self-build homes or passive houses aiming for superior insulation and airtightness.
If your goal is to build a high-performance, energy-efficient home, SIPs are a smart choice. They not only provide excellent insulation but also help achieve airtight construction, making them well-suited for passive-certified builds. Our typical clients are landowners or homeowners looking to build energy-efficient, new homes.
Structural Insulated Panel Services from AWA
Our expert structural engineers possess in-depth knowledge of SIPs and can provide precise engineering calculations for building control and warranty providers. Our approach ensures that every project meets the necessary engineering design standards and complies with all building regulations.
Using architectural drawings, our engineers create detailed calculations, determining the correct size for each SIP panel, as well as the line and point loads throughout the building. Additionally, we assess the need for ancillary components, such as structural beams to support the roof or lintels for large openings.
