Are you at the conceptual stage of a self-build and wondering what materials are best to use for your build? Perhaps you’re considering extending your existing property with a swimming pool or basement, or remodelling you garden with some retaining walls? If so, you might want to ask us about Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF). An innovative construction approach that is gaining traction in the UK owing to its incredible energy saving properties and airtight qualities. The quality of a ICF built house are second to none.
For any build, partnering with an experienced structural engineer is essential and if we are introduced to your project at the initial stages, we can help present the case for ICF. At AWA, we offer comprehensive engineering services tailored to ICF construction, from advice and guidance at initial concept stage, through to detailed design calculations and drawings suitable for the build to become a reality. Our expertise ensures safety, compliance with regulations, customisation and quality control are all fully thought through, leaving no room for error and a house that feels high quality, quiet and a perfect temperature.
If you’re unfamiliar with it, you might be curious about what ICF entails. Already widespread in USA, Canada and parts of Europe, it is a contemporary construction method that uses lightweight hollow block units made from insulating materials, such as polystyrene and woodcrete, into which concrete is poured to create a strong and robust structure with a highly efficient thermal and acoustic performance compared to other construction methods.
This performance is achieved thanks to the thermal mass of the concrete and the integral insulation of the blocks, meaning there’s no cavity like a traditional masonry wall. This makes the structure very airtight, meaning it is incredibly efficient at keeping the heat in, and keeping it out in the summer. This efficiency allows for regular temperatures and consequently a vast reduction in energy costs – imagine never having to put the heating on in your home again! The acoustic performance also means it is an incredibly quiet home, meaning peace and quiet from any noise from outside the home.
Complexity of the Project: Whilst ICF lends itself to modular builds, there’s no need to abandon the unique architectural designs of your project such as curves and cantilevers as these can be achieved with ICF. Working with a structural engineer who specialise in ICF means these design aspects are all incorporated in the structural calculations and drawings, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the build without compromise to beauty.
Compliance Requirements: Building regulations and codes may require specific engineering expertise for certain types of construction. We can help ensure that your project meets these regulatory standards.
Peace of Mind: Having a structural engineer involved in your project provides reassurance that the design and construction processes are being overseen by a qualified professional with expertise in ICF construction, alleviating concerns about safety, compliance, and quality control.
