The project involved designing a modern rear extension for a Grade II Listed property in Salisbury City Centre, historically used as a bakery. The previous 1970s extension was unattractive and restricted access to the generous rear garden. AWA provided structural engineering expertise to enable the architect’s vision: a contemporary kitchen space maximising natural light, improving circulation, and celebrating garden views, all while preserving the building’s historic character.
We delivered foundation and superstructure designs, incorporating masonry, timber, and steelwork to support dark zinc and cedar cladding, large windows, and a partly glazed roof. Internally, our structural solutions allowed previously blocked areas to be opened, seamlessly connecting the kitchen and seating area to the garden. Working within a tight city centre site, we optimised the size and weight of structural members, ensuring efficient handling and installation while minimising disruption to the historic fabric.
The project was nominated for a Civic Society Conservation Award in 2023, with judges praising its lightness, clarity, and sensitive integration with the existing house. The extension significantly enhanced both the functionality and aesthetics of the property, demonstrating how contemporary design interventions can harmonise with historic buildings while meeting modern engineering standards.
