What is a Confined Space Survey?

What is a Confined Space Survey?

You may have a project that contains a confined space, yet understanding the condition of a structure is critical. At AWA, we carry out surveys in areas classified as confined spaces, conducting structural or condition inspections within spaces designated as confined under UK regulations. Such spaces may be enclosed, have restricted access, or contain hazards that make entry challenging — for example, tanks, silos, service tunnels, plant rooms, or manholes.

The Role of Risk Assessment

Before any survey work begins, our team undertakes a thorough risk assessment to identify and control potential hazards. These may include risks from low oxygen levels, harmful gases, restricted movement, or slippery surfaces. Once risks have been identified and managed through appropriate Risk Assessment Method Statement (RAMS) and Safe Systems of Works (SSOW) procedures, we can safely carry out inspections, taking all necessary precautions, document defects, take measurements, and provide recommendations for maintenance or remediation — all while working safely in a confined environment.

Our Engineers are trained for both medium and high-risk confined space entry with full working breathing apparatus that may be required for the specific confined space.

Conducting the Survey

Our confined space surveys follow the same principles as standard structural surveys, but with adjustments for the environment. We use specialist access equipment such as harnesses, ladders, and breathing apparatus, ensuring that all observations and measurements are undertaken with full consideration of the limitations imposed by the confined space.

Legal Framework

Our surveys comply with UK law, including the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 (HSWA), which sets out the overarching duty to protect employees, and the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997, which govern safe entry, risk assessment, and work in confined spaces. The HSE’s guidance emphasises that appropriate precautions must always be in place to control risks such as fire, explosion, asphyxiation, or drowning.

Why It Matters

Confined spaces can conceal critical structural or operational issues. By providing a properly planned confined space survey, AWA ensures the accurate assessment of a structure, helping our clients maintain safe, reliable, and long-lasting assets.
