Suetts Farm, in Bishops Waltham, Hampshire, is a Grade II listed 17th-century farmhouse. The project added a modern extension, designed by Paul Cashin Architects. The new structure connects to the original via a minimal frameless glass link, allowing the forms to coexist without competing visually. The extension features a hip-gable roof, handmade clay tiles, and a concrete plinth, complementing the farmhouse while providing generous open-plan living spaces and panoramic garden views of the surrounding landscape.
AWA was responsible for the structural design of the extension. Our focus was detailing a steel frame to support the open-plan layout and vaulted ceilings without intrusive beams or columns. The frame was carefully engineered to strict deflection limits to protect brittle internal finishes and align precisely with the glazed link, ensuring both structural integrity and aesthetic quality.
Our close relationship with the architect ensured understanding of the high level of detail expected. Extensive design-phase coordination on geometry and buildability made construction seamless. To the client’s delight, the result is a harmonious blend of old and new, with the extension achieving a crisp modern expression, light-filled open spaces, and full respect for the listed farmhouse’s historic character.
