Springfield Gardens is a development of eight new homes in the heart of Romsey, Hampshire, delivered by Wilson Designer Homes. The client’s aim was to maximise housing yield on the site while providing marketable, eco‑efficient homes within fixed build budgets. Our role was to provide feasibility advice and, subsequently, structural design services for the houses, comprising timber‑frame superstructures over traditional foundations.
AWA was involved from an early stage, providing advice to the client regarding ground conditions and the anticipated foundation solutions prior to purchase. This guidance allowed the client to carry out a cost analysis and proceed with development. Closed‑panel timber framing was selected for the houses due to its speed of construction, thermal performance, and cost efficiency. Additional design measures were implemented to mitigate heave caused by tree roots, using deep strip foundations in sensitive zones.
During detailed design, we coordinated closely with the architect and developer to ensure a cohesive design. On site, we conducted inspections and design checks, addressing unexpected ground level variations by adjusting footing depths and carrying out minor re‑grading. The development incorporates client‑specified eco‑features—including solar panels, A‑rating boilers, and an energy‑efficient building envelope—supporting the marketing of high‑performance, sustainable homes.
