The project involved converting and extending an existing office building at Haslar Marina to create a new restaurant for everyday visitors and berth-holders. The client aimed to elevate the marina’s facilities with a modern, comfortable venue that would support wider improvements across the site. The completed restaurant, The Creek, delivers relaxed dining with direct views across the water, providing a welcoming environment that enriches the marina’s identity and strengthens its appeal for users throughout the year.
AWA provided full structural design for the conversion. Given limited historic information, we began with a detailed survey to understand the existing structure’s condition and capacity. Using these findings, we designed new piled foundations to support the timber-framed extension and introduced new internal steel frames, to open up the internal layout. This approach enabled the restaurant’s spacious, flexible floor plan while maintaining appropriate load paths and compatibility with retained elements.
Uncertainty around existing foundation positions created the project’s primary challenge. As ground investigations progressed, we refined pile locations and modified reinforced ground beam design to suit the conditions encountered. This responsive design process ensured a stable and compliant structural solution, ultimately enabling a smooth transformation into an open, welcoming waterfront restaurant.
