Stubwood Granary involved transforming two historic grain silos into a contemporary dwelling. These vertical structures were originally engineered to store and protect large quantities of grain, using high-grade galvanized steel panels as both the structure and cladding. Their cylindrical form provided inherent structural efficiency, meaning any adaptations required careful analysis and consideration to leverage the industrial buildings for residential adaptation.
The project required inserting new floors and creating openings for windows and doors, which reduced the silos’ natural structural capacity. To address this, isolated steel frames were strategically introduced, restoring both vertical load-bearing and lateral stability. Importantly, engineering judgement confirmed that the existing foundations were more than adequate, originally designed to support immense grain loads, which simplified the adaptation process and reduced additional construction.
The result is a striking high-value home that blends industrial heritage with modern living.
