The Mountbatten Sports Centre underwent a £16m extension and refurbishment, creating a modernised leisure destination for the city of Portsmouth. The redevelopment introduced a new 50-metre, eight-lane competition swimming pool alongside a teaching pool and significantly improved fitness and health facilities. The scheme also enhanced the building’s public areas, including a welcoming entrance foyer and café that better connects the existing centre with the new extension. The venue now provides a 150-station gym, changing facilities and spectator areas.
AWA were responsible for the structural design, including a long-span curved glulam roof over the new pool hall, creating a striking architectural form while spanning the large open space required for the swimming environment. The structure delivers both visual impact and efficient structural performance. AWA also designed the structural elements of the new pool itself, carefully integrating the pool tank and surrounding structure with the wider building extension.
Further design by AWA included curved steel roof over the new gym, creating a dynamic interior while maintaining the large column-free space required for equipment and circulation. The design also incorporates a distinctive circular balcony, forming a dramatic viewing platform and focal point. The project demonstrates AWA’s ability to deliver structural solutions across multiple materials while supporting a bold architectural vision.
