Manston House is a Grade II listed country house in the Dorset village of Manston near Sturminster Newton. The property sits within the Blackmore Vale and has origins dating back several centuries, with later Georgian and Victorian alterations shaping the building seen today. The project focused on conservation of the house while upgrading the property for modern living. Extensive restoration works retained historic features including fireplaces, original joinery and traditional window details, preserving the architectural character of the building while revitalising the estate as a contemporary residence.
AWA provided structural design services for a new double storey wing, which was carefully conceived to complement the scale and proportions of the existing listed building while creating additional living space. Our design ensured the structure integrated with the historic fabric, allowing the extension to appear sympathetic to the original architecture while meeting structural and performance standards.
In addition to the new build wing, AWA delivered structural solutions to facilitate restoration of the existing house. This included assessing the historic structure and designing interventions that stabilise and strengthen the building while minimising disruption to original materials. Working closely with the design team and contractor, our engineering approach supported a careful balance between preservation and modernisation.
