The Bristol Maid Hospital Metalcraft facility supports the manufacture of specialist healthcare equipment used in hospitals and clinical environments. To meet growing demand and streamline operations, the project involved a major extension to the existing site. The expansion consolidates a range of off-site processes under one roof while significantly increasing warehousing capacity for product storage and distribution, along with new office accommodation and improved staff welfare facilities.
AWA was responsible for the structural design including foundations, suspended ground floor slab and steel portal-framed superstructure. The suspended slab was designed to sustain significant loading from equipment, storage and vehicle movements within the facility. Constructed using block and beam permanent formwork, the slab avoided the need for a traditional ground-bearing solution which required substantial imported fill, delivering both material and cost efficiencies.
The completed extension provides a highly adaptable manufacturing environment capable of supporting evolving production processes. Loading bay provisions were integrated to improve goods handling and distribution efficiency across the site, helping to create a facility that can accommodate future operational changes. AWA continues to support the client with ongoing alterations as manufacturing operations develop and expand, with a clear understanding that solutions must not disrupt 24-hour operations.
