Delivering sensitive structural interventions and modern extensions transformed a historic worship space into a flexible, accessible and community-focused environment.
AWA provided structural and drainage engineering services for the redevelopment of Holy Saviour Church Bitterne, a Grade II listed parish church in Southampton. Designed by Studio Four and delivered by Mountjoy, the scheme consolidated previously separate church and community facilities onto a single central site. The project included a new two-storey extension linked to the historic church through a contemporary glazed connection featuring a bridge and staircase.
AWA developed structural solutions that respected the historic fabric and archaeological constraints of the site. Within the existing church, we designed a new timber floor and steel-framed mezzanine to create flexible multi-use spaces, while carefully positioning supports and foundations to avoid disturbing underlying archaeology. The new extension incorporated masonry and steel construction with a vaulted roof structure, alongside piled foundations designed to avoid clashes with existing burials. By providing both structural and drainage designs, AWA was able to coordinate efficiently as a single team and deliver a complete engineering solution.
Completed across two phases, the redevelopment introduced meeting rooms, halls, kitchens, accessible facilities, and improved circulation throughout the site. The transformation has created a modern, adaptable environment that supports worship, events, and wider community use while preserving the church’s historic character at the heart of Bitterne.
