Hillcroft is a Grade II-listed early 18th-century stone cottage in Chicksgrove, Wiltshire, previously burdened by a visually intrusive 20th-century extension. The project involved substantial alterations and a sympathetic new addition by Favonius Architects to improve functionality, aesthetics, and connection to the landscape. Its primary aim was to replace the unsatisfactory 1960s work with modern, light-filled space while preserving the cottage’s historic character and significance.
AWA delivered the full structural design for the extension, including the steel frame for the single-storey element with overhangs. This required tightly coordinated engineering to integrate new structure with delicate historic fabric. Our solutions ensured robustness while maintaining architectural intent, allowing contemporary elements to align seamlessly with the original building.
The extension significantly softened the impact of the earlier 1960s addition while introducing refined contemporary architecture. Cedar cladding provides a warm contrast to the stone cottage, and the restrained scale ensures the historic form remains dominant. Internally, improved daylight, circulation, and usability enhance everyday living without diminishing heritage value. The project’s sensitive approach and successful balance of old and new earned a Salisbury Civic Society Award recognising its exemplary heritage-led design.
