Hill Head House is a bespoke seafront residence overlooking the Solent. The property was self-designed and constructed by the client to create a modern home that maximises coastal views while delivering strong environmental performance. Its exposed shoreline location required a structure capable of withstanding coastal weather conditions, including high winds and salt-laden air. Achieving a durable building envelope and high thermal efficiency were therefore key objectives from the outset, leading to the selection of insulated concrete formwork (ICF).
AWA provided the structural engineering design for the project, drawing on specialist experience with ICF. The scope included design of the foundations and reinforced concrete superstructure formed within the ICF walls, together with the timber roof structure and isolated steelwork members. Outline reinforcement layouts were developed for key structural scenarios, including concentrated loads, structural piers and areas above openings.
ICF construction uses lightweight interlocking insulation blocks assembled with reinforcement to create wall profiles before being filled with concrete. Once cured, the insulation remains permanently in place, forming an insulated envelope around the structural core. This system combines structural strength with excellent thermal performance and airtightness, reducing heat loss and improving energy efficiency. For Hill Head House, ICF enabled efficient and cost-effective construction for the client.
