Hambleden Manor is a Grade II* listed Elizabethan manor, constructed in 1603. Built of distinctive flint with brick dressings, it forms a prominent part of the historic Chilterns village. AWA were appointed to provide engineering services for refurbishment and alteration works enhancing the property for contemporary residential use while respecting its heritage significance.
The works included a new basement swimming pool and upgrades to existing wine cellar spaces within the historic structure. Introducing new facilities below a centuries-old building required careful structural assessment to protect the historic flint masonry walls and timber structure above. AWA developed discreet strengthening solutions, integrating steelwork and reinforced elements where required to support new loads and altered layouts. Investigation of the existing fabric ensured structural interventions remained minimal while maintaining the character and integrity of the listed manor.
Close collaboration between the design team was essential throughout the project. Regular coordination between engineers, architects and contractor ensured the structural design supported the architectural vision and conservation approach. AWA remained involved during construction, undertaking inspections and responding to discoveries typical of historic refurbishments. Structural details were adapted where necessary as hidden conditions were uncovered.
