Ham Hill is a new eight-bedroom country house near Newbury, Berkshire, set within the rural landscape of the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The project created a substantial private residence designed in a traditional architectural style using masonry and natural stone to reflect surrounding country houses. AWA were appointed to deliver the structural and drainage engineering design.
AWA carried out the full design and detailing of the building’s substructure and superstructure, working closely with Johnston Cave Associates and the contractor throughout the project. The structure combines traditional masonry construction with modern engineered elements including posi-joist floors supported by structural steelwork to achieve efficient spans and flexible layouts. Trussed rafter roofs were used to provide structural efficiency while maintaining traditional pitched roof forms. A separate split-level garage and accommodation building required careful reinforcement detailing by AWA’s technician team.
Favourable chalk ground conditions allowed AWA to design traditional shallow strip foundations. Surface water drainage was managed through soakaways, while foul drainage was directed to drainage fields suited to the permeable ground. AWA also maintained a regular on-site presence, attending contractor meetings and coordinating with the architect and client during construction.
