A technically complex leisure development transformed a constrained brownfield site into a modern, welcoming facility supporting health, wellbeing, and community use.
Five Rivers Leisure Centre in Salisbury was developed to provide modern sports and leisure facilities, including sports and leisure pools, changing facilities, plant rooms and car parking on a contaminated site. Our role was to deliver the full civil and structural design, creating a building that supports active lifestyles for local residents while tackling complex ground conditions and meeting the client’s functional and aesthetic ambitions. The structural concept was shaped to respond to both engineering rigor and architectural expression, reflecting the client’s desire for high-quality community infrastructure.
The leisure centre’s pool building incorporates a long-span circular hollow section triangle truss and significant glulam rafters, with exposed structural elements and engineered connections between steel and timber creating a distinctive architectural feature. The design needed to resolve long spans over wet and changing areas while accommodating heavy servicing and plant loads.
As Salisbury’s principal health and wellbeing centre, the facility continues to support swimming, fitness, and community activities. Recent sustainability upgrades, including renewable energy measures such as solar canopies and efficient heating systems, demonstrate continued investment in reducing carbon emissions and operational costs, aligning with wider council sustainability goals.
