A new weather-protected industrial shed created to provide comprehensive boat-care facilities for a busy marina boatyard, enhancing service capacity.
The project involved delivering a new industrial shed at Conwy Marina to enhance Boatfolk’s boatyard operations with a covered facility for boat servicing and maintenance. The completed shed forms part of a wider investment by Boatfolk and enables the operator’s maintenance arm to service boats of up to 14 metres in length under cover.
AWA was appointed to design the structural frame of the Boatcare Shed — specifically a portal-frame structure — and to design and detail the raft foundation supporting it. We produced reinforcement fabrication drawings and coordinated closely with the specialist portal-frame supplier to ensure the foundation geometry and layout aligned precisely with the structure above. Due to the poor ground conditions at the marina site, we proposed a raft foundation to avoid the cost and complexity of piled solutions. This provided a stable base capable of accommodating the required loads while offering an efficient and cost-effective foundation strategy.
The new technical centre now provides sheltered maintenance and repair services — including hull work, GRP repairs, antifouling, and engine and thruster servicing — improving convenience and service quality for boat owners. The shed was delivered on time and within budget, earning highly positive client feedback. The project also supported wider improvements to the boatyard, including external slab and drainage works, along with the design of wash-down facilities designed by AWA.
