Becontree Heath Leisure Centre in Dagenham is a purpose-built community leisure destination designed to support active lifestyles and serve a diverse population. The centre anchors regeneration efforts at the Merry Fiddlers crossroads and replaces older, less visible facilities to create a highly accessible public amenity. The scheme includes a bold architectural presence that enhances the urban streetscape while signalling the importance of health, sport, and community engagement.
At the heart of the centre is a large 25 × 25 m swimming pool with a moveable floor and 250-seat spectator gallery, enabling a range of aquatic activities from teaching and fitness to community events. A dedicated teaching pool supports lessons and family use, while a multi-court sports hall, extensive gym facilities and soft play areas provide broad-appeal amenities for all ages. The facility’s layout and structural design needed to accommodate varied loading patterns, a challenge which AWA addressed through the full structural design of the centre including the pool.
Since opening, the leisure centre has become a hub for health and wellbeing. Its comprehensive facilities contribute to lifelong sport and fitness opportunities for residents, and programmes that provide ongoing social benefits. Operated in partnership with community-focused providers, the centre complements wider borough initiatives to improve quality of life and promote active lifestyles.
