Ashley Park represents a landmark moment in rural planning, as the first new country house approved under exceptional “Gummer Clause” provisions. These regulations require outstanding architectural quality for isolated countryside developments. Set within a 700-acre estate, the project established a new focal point where none previously existed. Its approval on appeal underscores the significance of its design ambition and execution.
Designed by Robert Adam, the house draws inspiration from classical precedents while introducing contemporary interpretation. The composition features two distinct yet harmonious wings: a cubic Bath stone volume housing formal entertaining spaces, and a simpler brick wing accommodating family living. Expansive glazing provides panoramic views, reinforcing a strong connection to the surrounding landscape. The scheme received the Georgian Group’s award for Best New Building in the Classical Tradition, recognising its refined proportions and disciplined detailing.
AWA provided the structural design for this complex and highly detailed residence. The project demanded careful integration of traditional materials with modern engineering solutions, particularly in achieving large open-plan spaces and supporting extensive glazing and stonework. Precision was critical in delivering the building’s clean classical lines and features such as the cantilevered staircase. AWA’s approach ensured structural integrity while enabling the architectural vision to be fully realised.
