The Sky Studios Chilworth development forms a key regional hub supporting broadcasting and technology operations. Located near Southampton, the facility accommodates critical infrastructure, including a technology centre, alongside energy and plant buildings essential for uninterrupted service. The scheme comprises a steel-framed office building over a reinforced concrete basement, supported by ancillary structures housing cooling systems and back-up generators, providing resilience for Sky’s UK-wide broadcast network.
AWA delivered the structural design for the superstructure and secant piled wall basement. The steel frame utilised a braced arrangement to efficiently manage lateral loads while maintaining flexibility for internal layouts. Cellular beams were adopted to integrate extensive building services within a reduced floor depth, a key requirement for this service-intensive broadcasting environment, supporting both structural efficiency and architectural adaptability.
A defining aspect of the project was the high level of coordination with building services engineers. Broadcasting facilities demand complex MEP systems, including cooling, power redundancy, and data infrastructure. AWA worked closely with the design team to integrate services within structural zones, avoiding clashes and maintaining programme efficiency, resulting in a highly functional, resilient facility.
