Abbey Barn is an iconic Grade I listed medieval tithe barn, originally constructed around 1400 and reputed to be one of the largest thatched tithe barns in the world. The barn forms part of the Abbey Farm complex, which is steeped in local heritage and now supports community and event use. The primary objective of the project was to carry out conservation works, restore the structure, and re-thatch the barn’s roof, thereby safeguarding its longevity and historic character for future generations.
AWA was commissioned to develop remedial structural design details for the barn’s restoration. Working on this sensitive historic asset, our role focused on condition surveys of the existing timber and masonry structure, together with the design of interventions that respected traditional construction techniques and detailing. The project required close coordination with heritage consultants and specialist conservation teams, ensuring modern engineering solutions were carefully aligned with traditional thatching and repair methods. AWA maintained a significant site presence, working collaboratively with the contractor to develop real-time timber solutions.
The restored barn now benefits from enhanced structural resilience and continues to serve as a valued asset within Abbey Farm, supporting events and public engagement. The success of the project was recognised through its receipt of a Wood Award in the Conservation & Restoration category.
