Driven by the need for space and improved energy performance, the brief was to design a new replacement dwelling. The house is built predominantly in high-quality brick with a clay-tiled roof and a zinc-clad rear dormer, using durable, low-maintenance materials throughout. A PV array, rooflights and extensive glazing maximise natural light, while a double-height stair atrium with additional rooflights enhances stack ventilation on warmer days.
To deliver the open-plan ground floor, generous garden opening and clean architectural lines, we designed a hybrid structural solution combining steel frames with load-bearing masonry. Steel beams enabled long spans and allowed for slender features such as circular posts to maintain openness. Careful coordination ensured that timber and masonry elements integrated seamlessly with the steelwork, preserving the architectural intent without compromise. With underfloor heating throughout, the structure fully supported the open-plan layout and high thermal performance.
Using a “fabric first” approach, the building envelope was heavily insulated and designed airtight. Combined with on-site renewables, the house is carbon-negative, generating more energy than it consumes. High-quality details such as the open-tread oak staircase, crafted brickwork and landscaped terraces ensure that sustainability and structure are complemented by a refined, cohesive aesthetic. The result is a contemporary home of exceptional quality.
