Having worked on an impressive variety of projects, including residential developments, sports grounds, leisure facilities, healthcare, and education buildings, Scott has a broad portfolio to showcase. His expertise spans all stages of design, from initial concept and planning support to Reserved Matters, Detailed Design, and Flood Risk assessments.
Scott’s role at AWA involves building the firm’s civils department, dedicated exclusively to providing underground drainage and civils design services. The vision is to scale AWA’s civils and drainage offering to provide wider services to clients. Scott said:
“My first step will be to grow the team to at least four civil engineers and then to look at the software we have, increasing our resources if need be.”
Recognising the integration of civil engineering within broader structural projects, Scott sees significant opportunities for AWA’s expansion. He said, “Many projects require both civil and structural engineering expertise. Our vision is to expand on the already established civils team, broaden our work into other sectors and streamline software and procedures to improve on the good services AWA already provide.”
Managing a large team in his previous role, Scott’s primary focus has been on leadership. In coming to AWA, he’s been able to re-engage his design skills and has been working closely with the wider civils team. Scott said: “It’s fantastic to be able to dip my toe into design work and apply my expertise directly again.
“I’ve worked on some exciting projects in my career. A particular highlight was the development of 1,200 residential homes on Stoneham Lane, Eastleigh. These works involved full drainage, and external works designs from concept to construction, sewer and road agreements. There was a significant amount of SuDS features required, which we utilised for treatment which offered up nutrient credits in excess of the requirement for the development. This meant that the client was able to develop other schemes in the area and utilise the excess nutrient credits and maximise the developable area on those sites.”
Prior to changing firms, Scott had worked with Brian Morton, Technical Director at AWA, on numerous projects. He had a positive perception of the firm which played a key role in his decision to make the transition.
He said: “Everything I knew about AWA prior to starting was positive, so I was looking forward to the change. I had met Mark and Andy before I accepted the role, and they always made me feel very welcome. It sounded a nice environment to work in and so far, has been just what I expected.”
Co-owners and Managing Directors of AWA, Mark Kent and Andy Simpson, are pleased to have Scott in-post and to be expanding the range of civil and drainage design services available to clients and collaborators.
Mark Kent, said: “We look forward to watching our engineers flourish under Scott’s leadership and expertise. Andy and I can already see so many exciting things coming from the new team.”
