Situated within the South Downs landscape near Petersfield, the project involved converting a neglected agricultural structure into a refined private pool house for a country estate. Working alongside BCM Wilson Hill, AWA developed structural solutions that respected the building’s traditional form while enabling modern leisure use. The project required careful pragmatic consideration of existing materials, historic detailing and long term durability.
Investigations revealed movement within the masonry walls alongside deterioration in sections of the original timber frame and structural connections. AWA designed discreet masonry buttresses to strengthen unstable walls, prepared remedial timber repairs and introduced carefully detailed connections to retain as much historic fabric as possible. New openings were also engineered within the existing masonry to accommodate large sliding doors and improve natural light.
AWA maintained a presence throughout the construction phase, collaborating closely with contractors and craftspeople to guide the handling of historic materials. The completed conversion balances contemporary comfort with the character and craftsmanship of the original barn. The result delivers a tranquil leisure environment while safeguarding the estate’s rural architectural heritage.
