The refurbishment of United Reformed Church Mere was designed to enhance the building’s long-term use for the congregation and wider community. Working alongside Studio Four and Greendale Construction, the project introduced a new entrance arrangement together with a steel-framed mezzanine level, creating valuable additional floor area and flexible internal spaces within the existing church building. Careful consideration was required to preserve the character and functionality of the historic structure while enabling modern accessibility and multi-purpose use.
AWA led the structural design of the mezzanine structure, including the supporting steel frame, balustrades, lift integration, and provision for heavy movable partitions to maximise flexibility of the space. Particular attention was required to coordinate the new structure around the existing roof supports, ensuring no additional load was transferred onto the original structure. Extensive collaboration with the architect and contractor allowed post and foundation locations to be refined during construction to avoid disturbing existing foundations and structural elements.
Alterations to the church entrance also required structural support for new openings and modifications to existing stonework. Through detailed coordination and reactive structural solutions, the completed project successfully delivers accessible, adaptable spaces that support both community and congregation activities for years to come.
