Commissioned by an internationally renowned contemporary art gallery, Reaching Out is a monumental bronze sculpture by artist Thomas J Price. Installed in the landscaped grounds in Bruton, Somerset, the artwork stands approximately 9 feet tall and weighs around 420 kilograms. Price’s work is widely recognised for challenging perceptions of identity and representation, often placing powerful figurative sculptures within every day or historic settings. This installation forms part of the gallery’s ongoing programme of outdoor exhibitions, drawing visitors into a dialogue between art, architecture, and landscape.
AWA were responsible for the design of the statue’s base and foundations, to ensure stability and safety. A key challenge was to support the significant weight and height of the sculpture while maintaining a minimal visual footprint. Rather than introducing new substructure, AWA identified an opportunity to reuse existing foundations from a previous installation. Galvanised steelwork was designed to span between the original footings, providing a robust and efficient support system tailored to the artwork.
The solution prioritised sustainability and adaptability. By reusing existing foundations, material consumption and site disruption were significantly reduced. The demountable steel system allows for straightforward removal and full recyclability once the artwork is relocated.
