All Saints Church is a Grade II* listed church with more than 800 years of history at the heart of the local community. AWA delivered structural and civil engineering solutions that carefully balanced heritage conservation with modern functionality. The refurbishment sought to retain the church’s spiritual identity while enabling flexible worship, events and community use within one of Wokingham’s most significant historic buildings.
AWA designed a new internal limecrete slab incorporating full underfloor heating throughout the ground floor, improving comfort and energy efficiency while protecting the historic fabric. Our works also included the structural design of a new north entrance with a bespoke stainless-steel door, a new steel-framed mezzanine on isolated pad foundations positioned to avoid ancient burials, accessible welfare facilities, below-ground drainage infrastructure, and landscaping throughout.
The project required extensive coordination within a live heritage environment. Historic features uncovered during construction, including Victorian tiles and decorative grilles, were carefully retained and integrated into the final scheme. Archaeological discoveries, including two brick crypts beneath the floor, required sensitive redesign of the internal layout and foundations. Through close collaboration with the wider design team, AWA helped create adaptable spaces for worship, performance, education and community events while safeguarding the church’s historic character.
